How to approach your dog without scaring them
Watch their pace, keep a safe space, and notice early trust signals.
- 1
Approach from the side. Walk calmly and slightly sideways. Heading straight at a dog can feel like pressure.
- 2
Lower yourself and wait. Stop a few steps away and crouch down. Let the dog decide to come closer.
- 3
Offer your hand. Relaxed, low, and to the side, so they can sniff you. Avoid reaching over the top of their head.
- 4
Read their body. Loose body, soft eyes, and a broad wag: this dog is comfortable.
- 5
Chest scratch. Start with gentle strokes on the chest or shoulder, not the top of the head.
