How to teach your dog to potty outside

Frequent outings, the same spot, and an instant reward.

    Short, frequent outings. At first, every 1–2 hours. Don’t wait for them to “hold it”; you’re teaching the habit.

    Same spot outside. Always take them to the same area. The smell helps link “this is the bathroom.”

    Reward in the moment. As soon as they finish outside, give an immediate treat. If you wait until you’re home, they won’t connect the action.
